Burao College of Health Sciences is located Burao City Tog-Dheer Region . Tog-Dheer Region is the second biggest populated region in Somaliland; it has also the second biggest referral hospital. Taking advantage of its’ midland location, has borders with four Somaliland regions and the Ethiopian-Somali region; as well as being the biggest livestock market in the zone. These strategic assets have made Burao regional
hospital an opportune referral and teaching hospital, to all the regions discussed above.
The prevailing economic crises in Somaliland, shortage of qualified nurses/midwives, in early 2010 low income, delayed payment of salaries, has created favorable conditions for cross-infection, chronicity of
inpatients and increasing costs to patients, relatives and the hospital. The resultant conditions have undermined scientific health care, encouraged a comeback of traditional medicine and techniques; and

To avert the declining hospital care qualities and professional practice standards, the regional health authority has commissioned the establishment of a professional nursing school in June 2005 , which has already enrolled 762 in service health works consisting of general nursing, Midwifes, lab. Technicians and 135 variety of community health workers. It has as well initiated senior degree programs in 2006.The community and local authority envision that Burao collage of health science will be empowered and privileged to be an efficient health care development and training zonal center. Given that the planned
infrastructure is completed mainly the student accommodation, we are committed to allocate fixed quotas’ to eastern regions (Sanag and Sool) to meet regional health staffing needs and continuous education.
