BCOHS has a strategic mission to foster high quality, ethical
society through research, education, training and capacity building. Supported
by local, regional, national and international champions, our membership
consists  of  academic  and  partner  organizations  who  are  committed  to
excellence. The “BCOHS Research Centre (BCOHSRC)” also referred
to as “The Research Institute” is responsible for thematic, multidisciplinary
research requiring a critical mass of academic staff and resources, centrally

Coordinated and directed, to deliver its mission.  The Institute provides

Convenient research policies, procedures and environments for the development of students and clients, and further initiates and contributes to new programmes associated with their research programmes.
The Department is headed by a Research Director (Mr. Mohamed Omar Ali) who who may be assisted by some of the college academic staff

Purpose:

The purpose of the Centre is to conduct large-scale, long-term, thematic research addressing strategic research questions demanding multi-disciplinary collaboration and dedicated orchestrated resources.

Mission:

The mission of the Institute is to establish regional, national and international leadership in most if not all
aspects of its research programme. Leadership will be evidenced by the volume of high quality publications
the Institute produces, the esteem of its academic staff, its output of trained, employable people at Masters,
Doctoral and Postdoctoral level and the impact of its outputs on academic and non-academic stakeholders.

Whilst the primary purpose of the Institute is to conduct and manage research, The Institute is expected to develop and contribute to delivering undergraduate and postgraduate training (by teaching &/or research) under the auspices of an appropriate School/Faculty.

Scope and Scale:

The multi-disciplinary nature of the research to be conducted by the Institute implies that it at least crosses School/Faculty boundaries. The Institute is of sufficient size and scale to achieve its mission and is self-
sustaining on the basis of income generated from partners, research funders and other sources including teaching. The institute is dedicated to conducting:

  1. Student Basic Research: This is geared towards ensuring quality research conducted by students
    at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  2. Applied or Faculty Research: For the purpose of solving everyday challenges at the College and
    societal levels for our clients, the institute also conducts applied or faculty research.
  3. Research Publications: The institute also focuses on publications of research articles at
    international journals and currently some of our researchers are recruited as International Peer
    Reviewers.
  4. Research Policies Development and Reviews: The institute further conducts the development
    and review of research policies and procedures at the College from time to time.
  5. Consultancy: With our many clients across the globe, the institute also provides quality and
    affordable consultation services depending on the thematic areas or needs of our clients. This
    ranges from providing research guidance/advice to provision of business solutions in combating
    today’s emerging challenges.

Operations:

  1. BCOHS Research Centre (BCOHSRC) maintains [i.e. regularly updates] the College

website to promote its research to external and internal stakeholders and liaise with Corporate Communications to publicize its achievements to the media.

  1. The Institute also plans and delivers seminars and workshops to develop its research interests.

iii.      The Institute is expected to attract leading researchers to work at the College for extended periods,

enhancing the College’s reputation amongst the international academic community.

  1. The Academic Staff belonging to the institute contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate

teaching and research supervision and are expected to develop & deliver (under management from the appropriate School(s)) postgraduate training (MSc, MRes) in areas relevant to their research theme, thereby contributing to financial sustainability.

  1. The Institute further expects to establish Doctoral Training Centre-like structures for the purpose of

PGR training in addition to normal Graduate School activities. PG student education will be overseen by a lead Graduate School but day-to-day responsibility for a quality PGR experience shall rest with the Institute.

  1. The Institute also participates in activities intended to enhance the reputation and business of the

Schools/Faculties to which they contribute, including promotion and recruitment, as required by the Head of the relevant School(s)/Faculty(s).
